Chapter Sixteen

Fluorescent lights shined down on Alex Debrowski, making his bald head look even shinier. His baseball hat had been removed, revealing that what hair they had seen with his hat on was all he actually had. He was slumped over, hands outstretched in front of him, the left one now bandaged, and his eyes focused on the steel table in a trance.

Tara and Warren had just entered the room, but he didn’t even bother to look up. It was as if he didn’t even notice, as if his mind was somewhere else completely. As they each pulled out a chair across from him, he lifted his head for the first time. His eyes were bloodshot, as if he was struggling to hold back tears. His face was white with fear, but his body was relaxed in defeat. He didn’t dare look them in the eye.

“You want to tell us why you had all those boxes?” Tara asked.

His eyes fell again to the table, staring hard at it as if he were trying to see past it. He didn’t speak, nor did he plan to.

“You stole them?” Tara asked, trying to get him to respond, but his eyes still remained on the table. His lips did not move.

Silence swirled around them into a storm of tense air. He looked up briefly but then locked his eyes on the table again. It was getting harder for him to remain silent.

“What did you do in in back of Serenity Jackson’s house?” Tara asked. “Did you steal those packages so that you could put them in the back of homes without question and set up a way to enter women’s homes?”

At that, he lifted his head sharply. His eyebrows knitted in concern. “What, no!” he said with a shake of his head. “I would never do something like that.” He looked between Tara and Warren as he spoke, but then his eyes fell in shame. “I would never hurt someone.”

“Well, why did you have those boxes then?” Tara asked.

Again, silence filled the air.

Tara sighed in frustration. “If you say you wouldn’t hurt someone, then you better explain why you had those boxes, because what we’re thinking says you would.”

He sighed, placing his elbow on the table, his head falling into his palm. He stroked his forehead hard. “I shouldn’t have done it,” he started as a sob left his throat. “My mom needed to go into a nursing home, but I was struggling to pay for it.”

“So, you stole packages?” Warren interjected.

“Not exactly,” he started. “A buddy of mine said he could help get me some money, so I told him when I dropped something off big, and he would come back later and scoop it up.” He paused briefly, stroking his injured hand awkwardly. “He was selling them for me on eBay and splitting the profits.”

“So then why were all those packages in your house?” Tara asked.

His eyes drifted into the corner, terror momentarily flashing within them until defeat settled once again. It was clear he knew he had already said too much, had already ratted someone out.
